FLOURISH AND DANCES 
Program Note by Kevin Norbury 

I wrote this piece for Intrada Brass which is conducted by Bram Gregson and based in Canada. The music is in four short movements: 

1.    Flourish: ceremonial in nature and flashy, perhaps a prelude to a courtly masque.
2.    Pavane: a short, slow dance in the style of the Elizabethan virginalists with a touch of Peter Warlock.
3.    Basse-Dance: a lively dance in triple meter inspired by the dances of Michael Praetorius.
4.    Hornpipe: a lively dance with a decidedly Scottish flavor to it which, in this case, gets quicker and quicker.
