The tune, Shenandoah, is one of America’s most well- known and recognizable folk tunes originating before the Civil War. Some believe the song refers to the river of the same name. Others believe it is of Native American origin. Suffice to say, it has been arranged for every combination of instruments and sung by soloists, choirs and folk singers since the 19th century.
This arrangement was written for the Black Dyke Band and the New York Staff Band cornet sections to feature together in a concert at the Royal Northern College of Music.
In The Salvation Army we have named this lovely melody with a sacred text by William Dunkerley, Mid all the traffic of the Ways.
Mid all the traffic of the ways
Turmoil without, within;
Make in my heart a quiet place,
And come and dwell therein.
This arrangement evokes that quiet place and invites us to meditate away from life’s stress
