Gabriel's Oboe (arr. Dorothy Gates) PDF
Gabriel’s Oboe is the famous main theme from the acclaimed film The Mission (1986). The music by Ennio Morricone won him a Golden Globe Award for best original score. From that score comes the lovely oboe melody played by the Jesuit priest Father Gabriel as he reaches out with the love-filled Gospel of Christ to the isolated Guarini tribe in the jungles of South America. In the film no text is sung to the tune, but several lyrics have been appended to it, including those in 2010 by Hayley Westenra entitled Whispers in a Dream. She completed the lyrics at the suggestion and with approval of Morricone. The refrain captures one key aspect of this immortal tune: When all is come to pass the storm has breathed it’s last and the rain has washed our fears away, Love will fall on us all and we can smile again.
This arrangement is a duet for soprano cornet and horn.
